Rape Culture in the Media and the Steubenville Verdict

Steubenville, Ohio students Trent Mays and Ma’lik Richmond were found guilty of rape.

There are a couple things I can’t get my head around.

1) The media has continued to call these guys “hometown heroes” with “promising futures”. Media outlets continue to blame victims of rape for things like being drunk, dressing a certain way, and flirting, all while trivializing rape.
2) There has been discussion about “talking to our daughters about being careful” when they’re at parties, careful while they’re drinking, careful with how they dress, yadda yadda.

What about talking to our sons, and telling them not to rape? Why– over and over– are young rapists with “promising futures” being victimized in the media?

This must be a living example of “rape culture” in America. It’s real.

Best of luck, and be good to other humans.
